Excellent, unpretentious villa on deserted beach near Tengalle
Rannaway is perhaps the best value villa in Sri Lanka. Located close to Tengalle on the sunny southern coast, this architect designed three-bedroom property is ideal for travellers seeking relaxed comfort and privacy.
Superbly designed, with large open plan spaces and water features, Rannaway sits atop a small hill overlooking an almost deserted beach.. The villa has polished cement floors throughout and the communal areas, somewhat abstract in design, are highly functional. The spacious living room looks out to sea and back across the main entrance and large water gardens. There is a separate dining room.
The bright and airy master bedroom, has an en-suite bathroom and sea-view. The additional two bedrooms, which also face the sea, share a bathroom. Outside is an elevated grassy lawn with sun loungers and dining tables. A small path leads down the garden to the dreamy beach below.
Nothing disturbs the peace except parakeets and dozens of other birds that make their home on this faraway stretch of beach. There are few houses in the vicinity – shady coconut groves, lagoons and wetlands dominate the coastline.
The villas is staffed by married couple Nihal and Sarojani, whose excellent laid back hospitality perfectly reflects the general atmosphere and pace of life in this part of the country. Although their English is limited, there should be no problems communicating. They prepare excellent meals at very reasonable rates. Sri Lankan cuisine is, of course, their specialty although they have a number of European dishes up their sleeves. Guests are more than welcome to cook for themselves too. Please don't expect butlers or room service on call – plenty of villas nearby provide that kind of service. Expect complete peace, freedom, privacy and a delightful beach - almost always to yourself.
